Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Land Use Attorney to join a well-established law firm in Hauppauge, Long Island. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced partners and play a key role in representing private and commercial clients on a wide range of land use and zoning matters. This role offers the opportunity to manage client relationships, appear before municipal boards, and help guide development projects through local, state, and regulatory processes. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with partners, clients, government agencies, and community stakeholders to navigate complex legal matters and help drive successful project outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Advise clients on land use, zoning, and real estate development matters, including compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Represent clients at public hearings, planning and zoning board meetings, and other municipal proceedings.
  • Prepare and review zoning applications, site plans, environmental assessments, and related legal documents.
  • Conduct legal research and draft memoranda, opinions, and reports on land use and development issues.
  • Liaise with government agencies, community groups, consultants, and other stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with partners and other attorneys to ensure effective case strategy and client service.
  • Keep clients informed throughout all phases of land use approval and permitting processes.

Requirements

  • The Ideal candidate will have a strong background in land use regulations, zoning laws, and real estate development.
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the New York State Bar is required.
  • 3–7 years of experience in land use, zoning, or municipal law (law firm or government experience preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of Long Island zoning codes, SEQRA (State Environmental Quality Review Act), and municipal processes.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with a high level of professionalism.
  • Experience working directly with municipal boards and regulatory agencies is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and client-facing communication skills.
  • Candidate should have excellent time management and organizational skills and be motivated to contribute to the growth of the firm.
